SDI Paragliding Academy · Cosmos, Minnesota
Flatland XC competition on Minnesota's big-sky prairie. Tow-launched thermals, county-road runways, and flights to the horizon.
About the event
Every July, Minnesota's central prairie turns into one of the Midwest's best XC arenas. Strong thermals boil off black soil and farmstead rooftops. Cloud base stacks to 8,000 feet AGL. County roads lined with corn and soybeans become your runway — and your infinite bailout.
SDI Paragliding Academy has run this event for over a decade. The vibe is welcoming for P2/H2 pilots dialing in XC fundamentals, and competitive enough to challenge the top regional pilots. Flights of 25–50 miles are common. The site record is 228 miles.
Competition classes
Five classes span paragliders and hang gliders. P2/H2 and above are welcome — competitive and community-minded at every level.

Any hang glider — flex-wing and rigid both welcome.
Kingposted hang gliders only. Strong Midwest tradition.
All pilots must hold a current USHPA membership. Minimum rating P2 or H2. Bring your own PG tow bridle — available on-site for purchase if needed.

Do I need my own tow bridle?
PG pilots should bring their own. Bridles are available on-site for purchase if you need one.
How is scoring handled?
All scoring runs through XContest. Create your pilot profile before you arrive — you'll need to be logged in for tasks.
Where do comp communications go?
Everything — task calls, weather holds, retrieves — goes through the 2026 Corn Alps WhatsApp group. Join before you arrive.
Can I camp on-site?
Yes. Tents and travel trailers are welcome at HQ. No utility hookups — come self-sufficient for power and water.
Can I bring family or spectators?
Absolutely. Tandem rides for spectators are available — pilots who can offer rides can note this on the registration form.
What if weather wipes out a task day?
Sunday July 19 is the make-up day. If conditions allow, the task runs. Otherwise it becomes a free fly and tandem day.
